Manually Configure Outlook for Exchange Online

Manually Configure Outlook for Exchange Online
NOTE: These steps apply to BPOS. If you are looking for steps to Office 365, please refer to our Office 365 steps for manual Outlook profile creation. I could not find any documentation anywhere on how to configure Outlook with Exchange Online. The only way that I discovered was to install the Microsoft Online Services Sign In Application which configured your MAPI profile for you automatically which I found several bugs in that didn’t work for me. ImapSync vs. MigrationWiz
In case you haven’t heard about ImapSync, it’s a command-line tool which can be used to migrate IMAP content between mailboxes. We’ve had a few customers ask us if they could use ImapSync as a cheaper alternative. Here is our answer. Speed: ImapSync wasn’t optimized for speed. Rebuilding the NK2 Cache Post-Migration
If you’re planning a mailbox migration which includes Outlook users, then you should know about the NK2 cache and how to rebuild it. Let’s face it, you’re too lazy to create a contact for each individual you communicate with. Which means you’re relying on the autocomplete NK2 cache perhaps without realizing it, and rebuilding it post-migration should be on your mind. The NK2 cache manages the data behind Outlook’s auto-complete feature. You type the first letters of a name (or e-mail address), and Outlook automatically proposes some matches. More »

Google Gmail “Account exceeded bandwidth limits” errors
When migrating from Google Apps/Gmail, you may encounter the error “Account exceeded bandwidth limits.” This is caused if you attempt to retrieve data too fast from your Gmail account. Normally, you would not encounter this problem migrating your mailbox with MigrationWiz as we have mechanisms in place to prevent this from happening. You may encounter this error if you are migrating your mailbox away from Google while having an email client downloading lots of data at the same time. More »

Outlook Autodiscovery Migration Issues
Given an email address, the autodiscovery feature allows Outlook clients to automatically find the correct home Exchange server. This feature makes it easy to create Outlook profiles without users having to identify and input the right server name. However, the autodiscovery feature relies on global environmental settings which can cause issues in migration and coexistence scenarios. More »

Getting to Office 365: Migration Pitfalls
In case you haven’t heard, the Office 365 administrative portal lets you initiate migrations directly from the web. This is a welcome addition to the Office 365 suite. However, there are a few important pitfalls you should be aware of. After your migration completes, source mailboxes will be disconnected from Active Directory. This is a significant problem if you need to rollback, want to compare source and destination mailboxes, or intend to perform a multi-pass migration. You also cannot control the migration process. There is no guarantee when the migration will start or how many computing resources will be allocated for it. This may have a significant impact on companies looking to migrate over a week end for example. More »

In this post, we evaluate the Exchange to Google Apps migration tool from a technical perspective. This tool is made available for free by Google. Unlike MigrationWiz, this is an on-premise migration tool which must be deployed locally. Its purpose is to assist customers wanting to switch from Exchange to Gmail.
